James R. Spence grew up in Harnett County, N.C. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1949 and from the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law in 1953. Spence practiced law in Lillington, N.C. Paul Eliot Green (1894-1981) also grew up in Harnett County. Green was an author, teacher, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, and humanitarian. The collection contains audio recordings of oral history interviews conducted by James R. Spence with Paul Green. There are also interviews with Green's wife Elizabeth Atkinson Lay Green and Green's sisters Erma Green Gold, Mary Green Johnson, and Caro Mae Green Russell. Interview topics include Paul Green's professional career and family life in Harnett County, N.C.; Chapel Hill, N.C.; and elsewhere.
